Planned Parenthood Fights Against Pre-Abortion Ultrasound Bill

Posted By on Mon, Feb 27, 2012 at 3:28 PM

Meridian Republican Sen. Chuck Winder introduced legislation today that shadows a controversial proposal from Virginia that would require a so-called "transvaginal" sonogram before an early term abortion.

Winder told reporters that he took a provision out of the bill concerning the controversial procedure, but a spokeswoman for Planned Parenthood Votes Northwest told Citydesk that Winder's edit didn't change anything.

"This is not fixing the bill," said Sara Kiesler of Planned Parenthood Votes Northwest. "The bill, as written, still requires the procedure. In fact, it still doesn't make any exceptions in the case of rape or incest."

A transvaginal sonorgram is a procedure in which a wand is inserted into the vagina to produce an image of the fetus.

"It's poorly written," said Kiesler, whose organization will be following the proposed legislation.

The Senate State Affairs Committee agreed this morning to hold a hearing on the measure. The committee's two Democrats, Sens. Edgar Malepeai and Michelle Stennett, voted no.
