Report Finds 18 Home-Grown Hate Groups in 2011

Eighteen hate groups have been identified by the Southern Poverty Law Center as operating in Idaho in 2011, up from 13 a year earlier.

The SPLC's annual report indicates that the number of hate groups and anti-government organizations in the United States has continued to grow during the past three years.

According to the SPLC, the growth has been fueled by "superheated fears generated by economic dislocation, a proliferation of demonizing conspiracy theories, the changing racial makeup of America, and the prospect of four more years under a black president who many on the far right view as an enemy to their country."

SPLC's so-called "hate map" includes two Treasure Valley organizations: Aryan Nations 88, a neo-nazi group in Boise, and Crusaders for Yahweh, which the SPLC says includes a "unique anti-Semetic and racist theology."

Six of the Idaho organizations listed North Idaho addresses. Five organizations didn't list an address, but according to the SPLC, were known to operate in Idaho, including the Aryan Terror Brigade, Northwest Hammerskins and Crew 38, each listed by the SPLC as a "racist skinhead" group.
