Nearly 200,000 Personal Medical Records Hacked in Utah

Utah officials are spending their weekend attempting to stop the hemorrhaging of data after discovering that nearly 200,000 of its citizens have had their personal medical information hacked.

The Utah Department of Health confirmed late Friday that hackers who downloaded thousands of medical files from state computers stole far more information than originally thought. Officials had theorized that hackers had stolen 24,000 Medicaid claims, but now they say 24,000 files were stolen, with each potentially containing information on hundreds of people.

Utah law enforcement said the attack began last week and likely came from eastern Europe. The information had been stored on a new server, where security tools had been installed improperly.
