8.6 Earthquake Triggers Tsunami Fears

Tsunami fears in the South Pacific were reignited early today when a magnitude 8.6 earthquake was reported off the coast of western Indonesia.

The U.S. Geological Survey estimated that the original quake was 20 miles below the Earth's crust. A December 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake was magnitude 9.1 and estimated to be at roughly the same depth and location. It triggered a tsunami that killed 230,000 people in 13 countries around the Indian Ocean.

The Indonesian government instantly dispatched rescue teams to Aceh province this morning, which was devastated by the 2004 tsunami, as residents scramble for higher ground.

Tremors were felt in Singapore, Bangladesh, India and Malysia, where tall office buildings shook for more than a minute.
