Idaho GOP Leader Sues Blog Commenter For Libel

Posted By on Thu, Apr 26, 2012 at 8:34 AM

Free speech takes a pretty good beating each election season and 2012 is no exception. The chair of the Kootenai County Republican Central Committee has filed suit against an anonymous commenter who posted a few unkind remarks on the Huckleberries blog of the Spokane Spokesman-Review.

The suit, filed by Tina Jacobson, claims a commenter going under the name of "almostinnocentbystander" posted libelous, defamatory statements. Jacobson's suit had to be lodged against "John or Jane Doe," since the commenter is unknown. But Jacobson is alleging that the owners of the Spokesman-Review know the identity of the commenter.

The suit alleged that the commenter claimed that Jacobson was involved in "$10,000 missing from the Republican Central Committee."

Dave Oliveria, who writes and edits the Hucckleberries blog, later removed the comment, but Jacobson wants the commenter bocked from "committing future acts of libel."
