May Day Rallies Include Occupy Boise Events

Posted By on Tue, May 1, 2012 at 9:03 AM

Occupy protesters and labor and immigration activists are participating in what they call a "May Day general strike" across the country today, encouraging workers and students not to show up for work or school.

Today's strikes are related to the May 1886 Haymarket massacre in Chicago, where demonstrators, asking for an (unheard of at the time) eight-hour workday, were sent scattering when an opponent tossed a bomb toward the crowd. Both workers and police were killed. Since 1891, labor groups across the globe have considered May 1 as "International Workers' Day."

In the Treasure Valley, Occupy Boise has scheduled its own May Day events, including a rally at the Anne Frank Memorial, a march to Capitol Park and speeches at the Occupy Boise vigil site in front of the Old Ada County Courthouse.
