Ada Sherriff's Office Launches New Patrol SUVs

After Ford announced last year that the Crown Victoria model would be discontinued, the Ada County Sherriff's Office embarked on a search for a new patrol vehicle.

The 224-vehicle ACSO fleet includes 70 black and white Crown Victorias, which will be replaced with the new choice, the Chevrolet Tahoe SUV, to take over for all marked patrol vehicles during the next five years.

Updated black and silver graphics accompany the new SUVs, with vehicles patrolling in Eagle, Star and Kuna marked as city police units. The ACSO say the higher ground clearance, increased visibility and gas mileage comparable to the Ford made the mammoth vehicles the natural choice.

They also said that the vehicle's climate control capabilities will save expensive electronics equipment from extreme temperatures.

Crown Victorias, on the road since 1992, have made up the core of law enforcement fleets across the country.
