Primary 2012: Brandon Hixon's Big Night in Canyon County

Brandon Hixon has quickly become one of the most recognizable faces of the Republican Party in Canyon County.

As Canyon County GOP presidential caucus chair, the confusion and excitement over the March 6 Idaho Republican caucuses pushed him into the spotlight. He said it also took over his life, at least for a few months.

“My wife had written on the calendar March 6 was caucus day and March 7, I get my husband back,” said Hixon.

But that didn't happen. Soon after the caucus, Canyon County Republican Sen. John McGee resigned his seat, leaving a critical Canyon County position open.

“I put my name in the hat for McGee’s seat, but Jim Rice was picked over me,” Hixon said. “But out of everyone, he was the one I wanted in there.”

But Hixon still decided to run in District 10, however, for House Seat A.

And Hixon was a winner Tuesday night, securing 51 percent of the vote to Jarom Wagoner's 48 percent.

Hixon said he has been categorized as a “rising star within the party” and so decided he could add his time and talent to the race. He now faces Democrat Travis Manning in November's general election.

“It’s a learning curve,” he said. “But I’m confident, and I think I have a really good shot.”
