Parents Urge McCall School Board Not to Eliminate Class Rankings

When McCall-Donnelly High School holds its annual graduation ceremony on Saturday, June 2, it will honor its senior class valedictorian and salutatorian, as it has for generations.

A proposal being considered by the district Board of Trustees to stop naming the highest and second-highest ranked graduates recently came under fire from some Valley County residents, who said they want to keep the current system in place.

This morning's McCall Star News reports that this week's school board meeting attracted a number of speakers, who urged the board not to eliminate class rankings.

"We already go overboard on recognizing the kids for sports; they get their gold medals,” said Dave Kennel, according to the Star News. “Why don’t we give gold medals to people who work in academics?”
