Idaho Senators Vote to Kill Paycheck Fairness Act

Posted By on Wed, Jun 6, 2012 at 9:15 AM

Idaho Republican Sens. Mike Crapo and Jim Risch joined their Senate brethren Tuesday by blocking the Paycheck Fairness Act, which called for equal pay in the workplace.

The bill fell short of the 60 votes needed for it to advance, but each Republican senator voted against the measure and it went down, with 52 "yes" votes and 47 "no" votes. The bill was strongly backed by President Barack Obama and Senate Democrats, who said it was needed to protect workers who try to find out how their pay compares to their co-workers, but Republicans said it put too much burden on employers. The bill would have made it illegal for employers to retaliate against workers who asked about their colleagues' salaries.

The vote was a procedural roll-call on a motion to debate the bill.
