Leavitt Execution Still Scheduled for Tuesday, With Court-Ordered Media Access

The Spokesman-Review reports that Idaho Department of Correction spokesman Jeff Ray has confirmed that the execution of Richard Leavitt will go ahead as scheduled.

Tuesday, June 12, will still mark Leavitt's execution date, following a 9th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals decision on expanded media access requested by 17 news organizations, ruling that the request must be accommodated.

A suit brought by those news organizations asked for the ability to view all aspects of the execution procedures, including the accused being prepared for the lethal injection.

Leavitt's execution marks Idaho's first inmate scheduled for death following the November execution of Paul Ezra Rhoades.

Ray told the Spokesman-Review:

“We'll take the necessary measures to ensure that the execution continues as scheduled. We're still looking it over and figuring out the specifics, but we will do what the court says we need to do, and the execution will continue on Tuesday.”
