Otter on SCOTUS Health Care Ruling: 'Sad Day'

Posted By on Thu, Jun 28, 2012 at 3:26 PM

Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter, who on one hand roundly criticized what he called "Obamacare," but on the other, said he would gladly take health care money from the Obama administration, said today that the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling to uphold the Affordable Care Act was not the right thing to do.

"Obamacare has been bad for America from the beginning," Otter fired off in a prepared statement. "This is a sad day for self-determination and for individual liberty. Change is now in the hands of the American people, and we must elect a new president and congressional candidates who will repeal Obamacare and protect our freedom to remain the architects of our own destiny."

In August 2011, Otter said he would be happy to take $30.9 million of Obamacare money to set up a marketplace for consumers and businesses to have greater access to health insurance, saying he had the same idea since 2007.

"My goal is to establish a state-based exchange emphasizing free-market principles, rather than imposing a one-size-fits-all solution that may not be suitable or even workable for Idaho," said Otter.
