Blaine County Under Drought Emergency

Posted By on Mon, Jul 30, 2012 at 9:10 AM

A Blaine County drought emergency has been declared, the latest in a string of similar summer warnings for the Wood River Valley dating back to 2002. The Twin Falls Times News reports that the order was signed by Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter.

Officials with the Idaho Department of Water Resources said Big Wood and Little Wood River snowpacks melted a month early, leaving the region's stream levels anywhere from 20 to 70 percent below normal. Additionally, wildlife officials reported significant fish kills in Fish Creek Reservoir.

IDWR officials are expected to weigh their options regarding existing water rights and possible diversions of water resources.

The Blaine drought declaration follows other drought warnings in Bear Lake, Clark, Oneida and Teton counties.
