Boise's Nick Symmonds is on track toward a medal in the London Olympics.

NBC announcers said the 28-year-old Bishop Kelly High School grad blew away the field, finishing first in this morning's qualifying heat of the 800-meter run. Symmonds now advances to Tuesday, Aug. 7's semifinal, and if he's successful, he'll be one of eight men to race in Thursday, Aug. 9's final.

Seven separate heats advance the top three runners to a total of three semifinal races. The elite eight get a chance to run for a medal.

Symmonds clocked in at 1 minute, 45.91 seconds in this morning's heat.

Four years ago, Symmonds reached the semis but did not advance to the final race at the Beijing Olympics.

The Boise native has also been crowned national champion on five occasions.
