BW Video Preview: A Sign of Trouble?

Posted By on Tue, Aug 7, 2012 at 9:13 AM

The controversial billboard message hovering above Caldwell's Franklin Road near Interstate 84, linking President Barack Obama to the accused gunman in the Aurora, Colo., movie theater massacre, has disappeared but it's just the latest in a string of images causing concern among City of Caldwell officials.

"Of the 25 years that I've lived in Caldwell, I've seen two positive messages on that sign," said Terri Ottens.

Ottens, who served as an assistant to former Caldwell Mayor Jim Dakan in the 1990s, was part of a steering committee that looked into the long-lasting effects of what it called the "negative self-image."

Ottens told Citydesk that an independent team of architects told Caldwell officials that the billboard "was the most detrimental thing you have to bringing businesses to downtown."

In Wednesday's BW, we examine the billboard, managed by the Ralph Smeed Foundation, and visit with the man who proudly defends its message.
