Nampa Can't Do the Math: School District Discovers $2.8 Million Error

Somebody in the Nampa School District is guilty of some pretty poor math skills.

This morning's Idaho Press-Tribune reports that the Canyon County school district made a $2.8 million budgeting error, affecting Nampa schools for the next two years. The announcement of the jaw-dropping error was made at Tuesday's Nampa School Board meeting.

Nampa School Superintendent Gary Larsen promised not to lay off or furlough staff to fix the unexpected problem, but the district won't be filling any open positions anytime soon.

Additionally, Nampa voters are deciding on a new two-year $1.6 million supplemental levy. Early voting began Aug. 13 and polls will be open Tuesday, Aug. 28. School officials told the Press-Tribune that the levy would "not be used to cover the district's deficit." The funding is earmarked for curriculum, supplies and maintenance.
