The Western Idaho Fair is a strange place in the days and hours leading up to when they throw the gates open: eerily silent carnival rides, colorful banners and booths being erected, animals by the score being hauled into their pens. But the craziness begins this afternoon when the 2012 edition of the fair launches. Nearly 250,000 attendees are expected to walk the fairgrounds over the next nine days.

Citydesk spotted one of the odder sites this week: a 1,000-pound pig sleeping off a hot summer afternoon. The pig, which tours the nation, will be on display with a few other oddities, including a live shark encounter, champion Frisbee-catching dogs and Weird Al Yankovich.

And, of course, the food. This year's fair is expected to register more than $1.2 million in gross sales.
