The Idaho Transportation Department confirmed today what most of Idaho knew already, that it had settled a wrongful termination suit with Pam Lowe. But what most people didn't know was that the state will end up paying the former ITD director $750,000. That's in addition to the nearly $600,000 that the state has paid to a private law firm—Holland and Hart—to litigate the case.

Lowe sued the state after being fired by the ITD board in July 2009, saying she was the victim of gender discrimination and political pressure.

Lowe said that ITD board member Gary Blick was especially inappropriate, saying that "no little girl would be able to run this department. What are we going to do when she decides to start a family?"

While ITD spokesman Jeff Stratten acknowledged the payout, he maintained that the transportation board still "believes that it was appropriate and within its legal rights to fire Lowe, but concluded a settlement is the best course at this time."

Stratten said the ITD board was still prepared to take the case to trial, "but the potential risks, time, expense and possible appeals meant the costs of litigation would continue to escalate."
