At Least 15 Separate Fires in Emmett, Lowman Ranger Districts

Fifteen new wildfires have been reported in the Emmett and Lowman ranger districts in the wake of a lightning storm Sept. 9.

The largest fire, at 35 acres, is seven miles northeast of Lowman. It spread quickly on account of windy conditions and bug-killed timber.

Two other fires near Scott Mountain and Deadwood Reservoir have challenged firefighters because of their remoteness, but smokejumpers have been able to gain greater access. The Scott Mountain Fire is currently 20 acres in size, while the Deadwood Fire is currently at five acres.

Suppression efforts have been successful at the Deadman Fire seven miles east of Horseshoe Bend at the top of Harris Creek. Easy access has helped firefighters stabilize it at just over one acre.
