Apple Sets Sales Record for iPhone 5, But Some Customers Won't See Devices Until October

At a sales rate more than double its predecessor over the same period, orders for the iPhone 5 topped 2 million in the first 24 hours of sales. Apple started taking iPhone orders at 1 a.m. Mountain Time on Sept. 14.

Apple officials announced this morning that most orders were expected to be delivered this Friday, Sept. 21 but, as expected, demand has again exceeded supply so some customers won't see their devices until October.

The iPhone 5 sells for $199 for a 16 gigabyte model, $299 for a 32 GB, or $399 for a 64 GB model.

Apple developers promise a bigger screen for the iPhone 5 and a thinner, lighter model compared to previous incarnations.
