Idahoans will get a new look at the Gem State on Friday, Oct. 19, when an updated map of Idaho's geology, in 75 colors, goes on sale to commemorate Earth Science Week. The 36-by-48-inch map will showcase Idaho's multibillion-year rock formations and terrain. The geologic survey was compiled from nearly 100 sources, including work from the U.S. Geological Survey, Idaho Geological Survey and academic institutions.

This morning's Lewiston Tribune reports that the new map will cost $20, plus shipping and handling, and can be ordered at idahogeology.org.

In particular, the first map in decades will detail rock units that have been causing landslides along the U.S. Highway 95 corridor.

"The geological record is more complete in some places than others," Idaho Geological Survey Director Roy Breckenridge told the Tribune. "It's really a piece of art. You don't have to be a geologist to be drawn to it. It encourages inquiry and discovery of the land we live in."
