Saint Al's Files Injunction to Delay St. Luke's Acquisition of Saltzer

Saint Alphonsus Medical Center filed a petition for an injunction today in an attempt to halt St. Luke's Health System's attempt to acquire the Saltzer Medical Group.

Saint Al's Nampa hospital and the physician-owned Treasure Valley Hospital filed the petition, alleging that St. Luke's would "create a monopoly of primary care physicians in Nampa who regularly see commercially-insured patients and will have a long-term detrimental impact on the Nampa community."

In March, Attorney General Lawrence Wasden confirmed that his office, along with the Federal Trade Commission, had launched an investigation into the acqusition.

Since 2010, St. Luke's staff of physicians has grown approximately 50 percent within its network, which includes hospitals in Boise, Meridian, Idaho Falls, Ketchum, McCall and Jerome.

The Saltzer Medical Group, based in Nampa, also has offices in Boise, Caldwell and Meridian.

"We did not arrive at this action without a lot of thought and reflection,” said Sally Jeffcoat, president and CEO of Saint Alphonsus Health System. “But because we believe strongly in our mission and our legacy of healing the body, mind and spirit of our patients, we are compelled to act."
