Idaho Attorney General Asked to Uncork Review of Corkage Fees

Following an incident in which an Idaho State Police officer reportedly warned a Wood River Valley restaurateur regarding so-called "corkage fees," the attorney for the City of Hailey is turning to the Idaho Attorney General's Office to weigh in on the matter.

This morning's Idaho Mountain Express reports that a law enforcement officer warned proprietors of CK's Restaurant in Hailey for charging customers, who brought in their own alcohol, a $25 corkage fee which owners said still wasn't enough to offset their loss of revenue.

Eateries charge the corkage fees to customers who may bring their own bottles of wine into a restaurant to accompany their dinner.

Hailey attorney Ned Williamson, in his letter to the AG's office, interprets Idaho law as allowing retailers to have "transitory possession of the wine for the purpose of pouring the wine for the customer," which he said validates the corkage practice.
