Blaine County Students 'Dream' About Free Tuition

Posted By on Thu, Jan 10, 2013 at 9:24 AM

Blaine County students and their parents are anxiously awaiting some big news that could be a life-changer.

The Idaho Mountain Express reports that Blaine County is the first Idaho community to participate in the "I Have a Dream" initiative, which guarantees college tuition for 50 third-graders. The program is currently operating in 56 cities in 26 states, but Blaine County is the first for Idaho.

If chosen, each of the 50 third-graders will participate in a 10-year program to help them make their way toward college. The students will be provided with mentoring, tutoring and more services to help them navigate the rest of their years in elementary and secondary schools.

To sustain the effort through the years, the I Have a Dream Foundation-Idaho was created as a new nonprofit and will continue to raise funds to fuel the tuition recipients.

A similar I Have a Dream Foundation, in Portland, Ore., has already launched 800 students into a college education.
