The Associated Press reports that a comment made Wednesday morning by a northern Idaho legislator regarding the ACLU, abortion and prostitution, had the Idaho Statehouse buzzing most of the day.

The AP's Rebecca Boone reports that at an ACLU legislative breakfast presentation on criminal justice, Coeur d'Alene Republican Rep. Ron Mendive asked ACLU Executive Director Monica Hopkins if "she felt the ACLU should support prostitution since it supports a woman's right to choose abortion."

Hopkins reminded the legislator that prostitution was illegal and not always the woman's choice. In fact, Hopkins told Mendive to be on the lookout for proposed legislation targeting human trafficking that may be presented during the current session of the Legislature.

Mendive, a first-term legislator representing Idaho District 3, campaigned by saying he supported "the right of the unborn child," saying that the U.S. Supreme Court ruling of Roe v. Wade, which is marking its 40th anniversary this year, was "a dismissal of an individual's contribution to the legislative process."

Boone reported that Mendive's comments Wednesday morning "drew audible gasps."
