Times-News: Charter School Close to Being Shuttered

Soon after the current school year began in September, Xavier Charter School—which has offered what it calls classical education to kindergartners through 12-graders in Twin Falls since 2007—said it was hemorrhaging money. At the time, Xavier officials said they faced a $23,000 deficit for its upcoming fiscal year and owed $81,000 in back taxes.

Soon thereafter, Xavier received a notice of defect from state charter school officials for "failure to demonstrate fiscal soundness."

This morning's Twin Falls Times-News reports that the future of Xavier hangs in the balance when the Idaho Public School commission makes a final decision on its fate during a special meeting, slated for Friday, Feb. 22.

“My understanding is that the school’s board intends to relinquish the charter and close the school as of June 30, 2013, unless successful lease renegotiations can be finalized before next Friday,” Tamara Baysinger, director of the commission, wrote in an email to the Times-News.

Springing from 1998's Idaho Charter School law, a total of 49 Gem State charter schools opened over 14 years. Five have since closed.

In 1990, fewer than 1 percent of Idaho school children attended charters. In 2011, that figure was close to 6 percent.
