DaVinci Charter School Closes, Sells Equipment to Public

More than a few tears are expected to be shed today as students, parents and teachers make their goodbyes on this final day of class for DaVinci Charter School.

The Garden City charter school, which opened in 2006 as the Garden City Community School, is shutting its doors at the end of class today after spending most of its years trying to keep up with expenses. School officials said the annual budget was approximately $500,000, and while they have been able to pay off most of their debt, they opted to close rather than incurring operating costs that couldn't be paid in a timely fashion.

To help pay off remaining bills, the school is selling much of its supplies and equipment today, Saturday and Sunday. Among the items for sale: Kindle Fires, Compaq laptops, printers and furniture.

The school had an enrollment of 130 students and included 18 full- and part-time staff. School officials said all of the children have made arrangement to be transferred to other schools or to be home-schooled.
