Idaho Woman Finalist For Citizen Service Before Self Medal

Posted By on Mon, Feb 25, 2013 at 9:03 AM

A Meridian woman is one of 23 nationwide finalists to be selected for Citizen Service Before Self Honors, narrowed down by the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation.

Shannon Martin distinguished herself by extraordinary heroism when she donated a kidney to a complete stranger. Martin saw the story of Darrell Neal of California on the Dr. Phil Show, and said she knew she wanted to help. Neal had been in kidney failure for seven years and needed daily dialysis to survive. Martin was tested and found to be a match for Neal. Doctors successfully performed the transplant in August of 2012, and Martin’s kidney now allows Neal to live a healthy and normal life.

Martin and the other 22 finalists now enter the next phase of judging to select four ultimate Citizen Heroes to receive special medials for their service. The four honorees will be announced Monday, March 11, and awarded on Monday, March 25.
