Press: Former Coeur d'Alene Payroll Manager Sentenced for Embezzlement

A former employee of the City of Coeur d'Alene, who admitted to embezzling $365,000 of public funds, was sentenced Monday to more than three years in prison.

Sheryl Lynn Carroll, 52, pleaded guilty in October 2012 to six counts of wire fraud, and told a courtroom that she "abused a position of public trust" when she served as an employee in the city's finance department.

Prosecutors said Carroll stole $365,000 through 120 fraudulent transfers from 2007 to 2012, when she served as a payroll coordinator for Coeur d'Alene. Prosecutors said she fraudulently recorded payments to vendors when in fact she was sending the wire transfers to her own bank account.

This morning's Coeur d'Alene Press reports that on Monday, U.S. District Judge Edward Lodge ordered Carroll to serve a 40-month sentence, in addition to three years of supervised probation, 200 hours of community service and restitution of $365,000.

"You had to have thought about the consequences as it was happening, if you got caught," Lodge told Carroll.

Carroll told the court that she was seeking help through counseling and faith, according to the Press.

"I am healing from that brokenness that brought me to this place," she said. "I ask for your forgiveness—everyone that I hurt."
