Study: Madison is Idaho's Healthiest County, Bear Lake Unhealthiest

Eastern Idaho's Madison County has the healthiest residents in the Gem State, according to the fourth annual County Health Rankings, released this morning by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute.

Bear Lake County, in southeast Idaho, was deemed the least healthy county.

According to the new rankings, the five healthiest counties in Idaho are Madison, Valley, Franklin, Latah and Blaine. The five counties in the poorest health are Bear Lake, Shoshone, Boise, Benewah and Lemhi.

Ada County was ranked seventh healthiest in the survey.

In particular, Ada County got high marks for its clinical care and its social and economic factors but low marks for the number of fast food restaurants.

“We all have a stake in creating a healthier community and no single sector alone can tackle the health challenges in any given community,” said Russ Duke, Central District Health Department director. “Collaboration is critical. The rankings present an opportunity for all sectors to join forces and create new possibilities in health—county by county.”
