Mountain Express: Sun Valley Skier Suffered Trauma to Chest in Skiing Fatality

Posted By on Fri, Mar 22, 2013 at 9:19 AM

Preliminary results of an autopsy conducted by the Ada County Coroner's Office indicate that a female skier, found unresponsive March 13 on Sun Valley's Bald Mountain, died as a result of trauma to the chest area.

This morning's Idaho Mountain Express reports that 38-year-old Melanie Kendall, a married mother of four children who worked for the Sun Valley Company, was wearing a helmet and that the initial autopsy report indicated that she sustained "no trauma to the head" and instead suffered damage to the aorta. The investigation by Boise forensic pathologist Dr. Charles Garrison indicated that blunt trauma to the chest caused damaging tears to the body's largest artery, the ascending aorta.

The final autopsy results are not expected for another seven weeks.
