Crapo, Risch Set to Filibuster Gun Control This Week

Both Idaho Republican U.S. Senators—Mike Crapo and Jim Risch—have signed on to a list of 13 GOP senators who say they're prepared to filibuster any pending gun restrictions to come before Congress.

The latest Marist poll indicates that 60 percent of those surveyed agreed that laws covering the sales of firearms should be more strict; 59 percent favored a ban on the sale of assault rifles; 87 percent support legislation that would require background checks for private gun sales and sales at gun shows.

Still another poll—by Quinnipiac University—indicated that 91 percent of those surveyed support universal background checks, including an 88 percent support from Republicans.

Yet Crapo, Risch and eleven of their colleagues say they're set for a filibuster when gun control comes before the U.S. Senate this week.

"We will oppose the motion to proceed on any legislation that will serve as a vehicle for any additional gun restrictions," wrote the 13 GOP Senators.

And while Idaho's Republican-controlled legislature opted to require fewer firearms restrictions, not more, lawmakers in neighboring Oregon are considering new leiglation that would prohibit gun owners from openly carrying weapons in public buildings, require criminal background checks for private gun sales or transfers, and require concealed handgun applicants to take a safety course and pass a proficiency test. Another bill would ban guns in primary and secondary schools, but local school districts could opt out of the ban.
