Sign of the Times: New Handicap Logo Unveiled in New York

The familiar blue-and-white icon that desigates a handicap zone is getting a major facelift in New York City and advocates are hoping that the change sweeps across the nation sooner than later.

Rather than the image of a static person sitting in a wheelchair, the new image instead displays an in-motion person with a disability.

The speedier-looking symbol began appearing Friday near thousands of parking spaces, bathroom stalls and signs throughout New York City.

The change after years of lobbying from disability advocates who said the old symbol is too passive.

The artist, Sara Hendren said she thought that the person in the old symbol "wasn't visible" and that the arms of the person looked like "machine arms" instead of real arms.

"It's about time that our society portrayed people with disabilities as active and forward-leaning," said Carol Glazer, president of the National Organization on Disability.
