Wake Up Call to Nevada Legislators: Get Up and Get Back to Work

Nevada state lawmakers, ready to head back to their hometowns, got an abrupt pre-dawn phone call this morning: Wake up and get back to work.

The Associated Press reports that Nevada Republican Gov. Brian Sandoval told the lawmakers that even though they had gaveled this year's regular session of the Nevada Legislature to a close, they had some unfinished business. Sandoval signed a proclamation this morning ordering the legislature to reconvene from 4:30 a.m. to 8 a.m. to pick up four proposed measures that had been left without consideration.

One of the bills would trigger a sales tax increase to hire more police officers in Las Vegas. Other measures involved school class size, economic development tax abatements and funding for Teach for America which sends recent college graduates to teach in urban and rural schools for two years.

The original session of the Nevada Legislature began February 4 and was supposed to be limited to 120 days. But Sandoval was having none of that, saying the remaining measures were too important to sacrifice.
