Labrador, Simpson, House GOP Say Yes to Farm Bill, Stripping Out Food Stamps

Posted By on Fri, Jul 12, 2013 at 9:57 AM

Idaho GOP Reps. Raul Labrador and Mike Simpson joined the Republican House majority Thursday to pass a new version of the farm bill, which stripped out the food stamp program, relied on by millions of Americans.

The vote narrowly passed with 216 Republicans voting yes and 12 Republicans joining 196 Democrats to vote no.

The current farm law expires Monday, Sept. 30.

The fate of food stamps, officially known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, has been returned to the House Agriculture Committee for its own piece of legislation.

Minnesotta Democratic Rep. Collin Peterson, minority leader on the House Ag committee, said the decision was "laughable if it weren't true" and warned of "draconian cuts to nutrition programs."

About 1 in 6 Americans access food stamps.
