Eastern Idaho Teachers Allege Hostile Workplace

Accusations and controversy—usually reserved for politics—are casting a long shadow over the the Blackfoot School District in Eastern Idaho.

Idaho Falls TV Station KIDK reports that a number of teachers accuse the principal at Blackfoot's Stalker Elementary School of being abusive. Additionally, the district superintendent admitted this past week that he knew about the issue for months.

A trio of teachers told KIDK that they collected 12 signatures from other elementary school teachers and staff, calling Stalker Elementary Principal Hal Silzly a bully.

"We went to the principal and nothing happened," second-grade teacher Shawna Matsurra told KIDK. "So we went to the next higher person, the superintendent, and still nothing happened."

Silzly, talking to KIDK while vacationing in Hawaii, said the teachers' claims "are retaliation for his efforts to run a tighter ship at the school," and that he has hired an attorney to assist with mediation.
