UPDATE: JULY 22 3 p.m.

The Ada County Corner confirmed that 23-year-old Taylor Wood was the victim in a July 20 drowning in the Boise River near the Willow Lane Athletic Complex.

Witnesses said it appeared that Wood had been pinned underwater after his boogie board was caught in tree branches.

The death of a young man boogie boarding on the Boise River cast a long shadow across the waterway Saturday afternoon.

Witnesses said the 23-year-old victim had been boogie boarding using a rope tied to a tree. His friends told law enforcement that the last time they saw him was when he was attempting to pull himself to shore with the rope. The friends said they walked away for a short time, but when they returned, the man was under water.

Law enforcement said it appeared that the boogie board became caught in some tree branches. The man was found with his leg strapped to the boogie board, which may have pinned him under the water.

The friends were able to call for help and emergency responders attempted life-saving measures, but the man was pronounced a short time later, after arriving at an area hospital.

Responders said that particular stretch of the river—near the Willow Lane Athletic Complex in northwest Boise—is hard to access as the Greenbelt does not run through that area.

A Boise Police officer had to be hospitalized when he was overcome by heat after running along the river trying to find the victim's exact location. The officer was later released from the hospital.

The name of the drowning victim has yet to be released by the Ada County coroner.
