The former Caldwell School District superintendent and former co-director of the Idaho Leads Project will soon be the No. 2 person in charge at the Idaho State Department of Education.

This morning's Idaho Press-Tribune reports that Roger Quarles, who helmed Caldwell schools from 2007-2010, served as an assistant professor in the Department of Curriculum, Instruction and Foundational Studies at Boise State University and was co-director of the Idaho Leads Project, will begin Monday, Aug. 19, as chief deputy at ISDE, overseeing all educational programs at the Department, including federal programs, assessment and content areas.

Quarles will replace Nick Smith who left ISDE recently to take a position as the new principal of Lowell Elementary School in the Boise School District.

Quarles holds a Ph.D in educational leadership from the University of Idaho.
