Ridge Fire Grows to 5,300 Acres With New Activity

New spot blaze erupt inside Ridge Fire on Aug. 7.

Firefighters are still battling the Ridge Fire—14 miles northeast of Lowman—which has not burned more than 5,300 acres. The fire is 46 percent contained.

A new 20-person Hotshot crew was flown into the area Aug. 7 to establish a fire line after a new 50-acre spot fire, torched by interior burning, erupted on the west flank of the blaze in the upper Clear Creek drainage. Fire managers have ordered two additional fire crews to the scene.

The 2011 Castro Fire is acting as a fuel buffer and holding any easterly movement of the Ridge Fire while the 2009 8-Mile Fire is serving as a southern barrier.

Fire crews are particularly concerned about the Red Flag warnings accompanying tonight's forecast of thunderstorms and possible lightning.
