Something's In the Kitchen: A Black Bear Enjoying Stir-Fry Leftovers

Chinese stir-fry was to blame.

A Ketchum family was awakened at 3 a.m., Aug. 5, by the sound of its dog barking. In particular, the dog was alerting his owners that there was an unwanted visitor in their kitchen: a black bear.

"I looked into the kitchen and saw this big, furry animal," David Edwards told the Idaho Mountain Express. "That was the most shocked I've ever been."

Edwards later noted that the front gate to his house on Parkway Drive had been left open, not far from a recycling bin, which was right next the kitchen door.

"I think he just kind of followed his nose," said Edwards. "Our door is kind of loose, so he just pushed it open."

Edwards said that the bear, up on its hind legs, made its way to the stove where it was licking a cast iron pan that had been used to cook Chinese stir-fry.

A spokeswoman for the Sawtooth National Recreation Area said bears are normally attracted to wild currants, gooseberries and buffalo berries, but the crop has been less abundant due to this summer's drought.

After being spotted in the kitchen, Edwards said the bear took off quickly thereafter.
