In what federal wildlife officials are calling a "freak accident," 176 sheep were killed Aug. 16 south of Victor in the Caribou-Targhee National Forest.

KTVB-Channel 7 reports that the owners of the sheep say the animals were trampled to death or suffocated while trying to escape two gray wolves. Each of the sheep—mostly lambs—was valued at approximately $200 a head.

An official with the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Wildlife Services office in Boise confirmed that there was evidence at the scene of the wolves hunting the sheep. they also discovered bite marks on the dead sheep.

The owners of the sheep may be eligible for compensation through Idaho's Wolf Depredation Compensation Trust.
