Lewiston Tribune: 28 Tribal Members Charged for Mega-Load Protests

Posted By on Thu, Sep 12, 2013 at 12:00 PM

Twenty-eight members of the Nez Perce tribe, including eight members of the tribe’s executive committee, have been charged with public nuisance infractions for protests carried out last month, the Lewiston Tribune reported this morning. The tribal members were trying to stop an Omega Morgan mega-load from traveling through the reservation.

Among those charged is tribal executive committee chairman Silas Whitman. Court documents say those charged entered the eastbound lanes of U.S. Highway 12 early Aug. 6 “while traffic was attempting to proceed and refused to leave the highway.” They were trying to stop equipment that will be used to treat water at an oil sands project in Alberta, Canada.

An arraignment is set for Sept. 20 in Nez Perce Tribal Court.
