Wasden, Attorneys General: Feds Need to Rein in E-Cigs

Idaho Attorney General Lawrence Wasden is joining 39 other Attorneys General in urging the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to put e-cigarettes on a shorter leash.

A letter delivered Sept. 24 from forty of the nation's top lawmen to the FDA points to e-cigarettes manufacturers using "cartoon-like advertising characters" and by offering fruit and candy flavors to lure younger smokers. The attorneys general said e-cigarette manufacturers were also making their product more affordable and widely available making them extremely popular in a short amount of time.

“Unlike traditional tobacco products, there are no federal age restrictions that would prevent children from obtaining e-cigarettes, nor are there any advertising restrictions,” says the letter to the FDA.

The Associated Press reports that the attorneys general are urging the FDA to comply with a Thursday, Oct. 31, deadline to issue new regulations to address advertising, ingredients and sale to minors of e-cigarettes.
