Get Set For 'The Big Idaho Potato Drop' on New Year's Eve

A large crystal ball is dropped in Times Square on New Year's Eve. Miami drops a huge orange. Atlanta drops a peach. Ocean City, Md., drops a beach ball. And Flagstaff, Ariz., drops a pine cone.

So, it only makes sense that a potato is dropped in Idaho ... a really big potato.

Plans are already under way to launch the inaugural "New Years Eve Idaho Potato Drop" at the Grove Plaza in downtown Boise at the stroke of midnight, Jan. 1, 2014. An organization calling itself The Idaho New Year's Commission has plans to lower a large scale lit-up potato to commemorate the new year at the close of Idaho's sesquicentennial.

Organizers say their plans include four city blocks to accommodate the expected crowd. Two sound stages will showcase musical acts and food and beverages will be available on the plaza.

The commission promises that the event will funnel some of the evening's proceeds to the American Red Cross and Idaho public schools. Their hopes are to make the potato drop an annual event.
