Idaho Teacher Wants to Flunk the 'R' Word

An Idaho teacher says the time has come to eliminate the other "R" word from everyday use.

And Lisa Baker, with the backing of her administrators at Pocatello's Irving Middle School, went as far as holding a special school assembly to shore up her campaign to rid "retard" from the vernacular.

"[Retard] was initially used and it still is used in the medical community," said Baker. "A lot of doctors still diagnose kids as mentally retarded. But that's where it needs to stay."

Baker told Pocatello's KIDK-TV that the thing that "wears on her" is being surrounded by kids with special needs and hearing someone using the "R" word in passing, even when they don't mean the word to be hurtful.

"I get that," Baker told KIDK-TV. "People don't mean to be mean, and I know people use it without being mean, but it's just time to learn to find something else to say."
