Bonner County Sheriff Disarms Idea of Putting More Guns In North Idaho Schools

After attracting a fair amount of media attention, officials in Sandpoint's Lake Pend Oreille School District say that they're holstering the concept of adding firearms to their schools.

The Bonner County Daily Bee reports that Bonner County Sheriff Darryl Wheeler says an idea of using retired law enforcement or military personnel to enhance school security was not "fully fleshed out or formally adopted by his department and the school district." The Daily Bee reports that the concept, which was reported by the Bee and nearby Spokane TV stations, led "some to mistakenly conclude that it is going to happen or is already under way."

"It's a huge undertaking," said Wheeler. "We have to look at that stuff very slowly."

Additionally, Lake Pend Oreille School Superintendent Shawn Woodward said the idea of introducing more firearms into schools was "overwhelmingly opposed" by her staff, and the board of trustees was "divided on the idea."
