Twin Falls City Council: 'Big Ed' Is the Only One Who Can Jump Canyon

The Twin Falls City Council decided Jan. 6 that "Big Ed" Beckley is the only one who should be jumping across the Snake River Canyon later this year, once he finalizes a lease agreement with the city, which owns the property on the south side of the canyon.

The Council additionally stipulated that if Beckley tried to back out of his proposed jump, due to financial or physical reasons, he wouldn't be able to transfer a lease with the city to another daredevil.

"Mr. Beckley was the one who bid on it, he was the one who made personal testimony about what he is going to do, and it is a personalized issue," said Twin Falls Councilman Chris Talkington, according to this morning's Twin Falls Times-News.

Twin Falls city officials said they were scheduled to next meet with Beckley, to discuss a number of outstanding items, on Monday, Jan. 13. The city of Twin Falls is continuing to negotiate with Beckley over who is responsible for public safety, transportation and clean-up costs.

In late December, Twin Falls officials said that improvements to the south side of the canyon could mount to as much as $2 million in preparation for the jump.

Boise Weekly sat down with "Big" Ed in late November to talk about his big adventures and his growing anxiety to get going with the design of the vehicle that might propel his big frame across the Snake.

"My engineers and designers are all waiting; but not patiently," Beckley told BW. "Let's say that the city of Twin Falls said 'OK' tomorrow. It would still be another 60 to 90 days before my builders turned their first bolt."
