Idaho Man Charged After Killing Retriever Who Mated With His Dog

An Eastern Idaho man is facing criminal charges after shooting a retriever for mating with his dog.

This morning's Idaho State Journal reports that Rodney Lish of the Bannock County town of Robin is facing misdemeanor animal cruelty and battery charges for the November 2013 incident. Prosecutors say Lish got into a fight with a neighbor when he discovered his dog had been "locked up and mating" with the neighbor's dog, a golden retriever. Court documents said Lish told the neighbor that he had shot the retriever and threw it in a ditch along the side of the road. Lish ultimately put the dead animal on the neighbor's front yard.

Lish was cited by the Bannock County Sheriff's Office and is set to stand trial on Friday, March 21.

The Journal reports that the case is the second recent Eastern Idaho incident of someone shooting a dog. A Labrador retriever was shot in early December 2013, and a Bingham County rancher admitted that he had mistaken the dog for a coyote.
