Following 11 Years Behind Bars, Canyon County Woman Freed From Prison

A Canyon County woman was not exonerated of her crimes, but she was released from the state prison March 14 after serving 11 years behind bars for the 2000 attack of a Washington woman.

Sarah Pearce was 19 years old in 2002, when she was accused of being the ringleader of an attack on Linda LeBrane, who was beaten, stabbed and left for dead on a Caldwell road.

But the Idaho Innocence Project had argued that Pearce was not part of the attack and that there were "inconsistencies" in some of the eyewitness reports.

This morning's Idaho Press-Tribune reports that Pearce kept a calm demeanor in a Canyon County courtroom March 14 but was very emotional when Third District Judge Juneal Kerrick ruled that Pearce could serve the next five years on probation. The judge ruled that Pearce was not exonerated but could still be released from prison.

“More importantly, it reaffirms that the only truly innocent person in this sad story of senseless violence is Linda LeBrane," Canyon County Prosecuting Attorney Bryan Taylor told the Press-Tribune.
