Ada County ranks sixth out of 44 Idaho counties for its overall health outcomes, according to new data released March 26.

The County Health Rankings and Roadmaps is a collaboration between the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin, and ranks counties based on vital health factors, including high-school graduation rates, obesity, smoking, unemployment, access to healthy foods, the quality of air and water, income and teen births.

Madison County—home to Rexburg and located in Eastern Idaho's Upper Snake River Valley—came out on top in the study, followed by Latah, Valley, Blaine and Franklin counties. The bottom five were Benewah, Shoshone, Bear Lake, Camas and Clark counties.

In particular, Ada County was ranked sixth in the state for length of life, ninth for quality of life, ninth for health behaviors, first in access to clinical care, fourth in social and economic factors, and fifth for its physical environment—ending in an overall ranking of sixth in Idaho.

According to the study, 17 percent of Ada County's adults and 7 percent of its children are uninsured. Statewide, 23 percent of Idaho adults and 10 percent of children are uninsured.
